HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUE
The human rights issue is living standards, health care, and potable water. People need good water to survive especially in Haiti, since they have the earthquake. Haiti is a poor place, and people aren’t doing well enough to help support them with
shelter, care, and protection. There are lots of disabled or poor children in Haiti that needs to be cared for. Haiti was hit by a horrible earthquake in January 12, 2010, but these problems have been around for several years. The earthquake happened around 35 to 60 seconds, but during those few seconds, everything was happening, such as people dying and losing important houses. Therefore, there is a defender that can help with all of these, such as making water much cleaner for people in Haiti to drink. This way, there won’t be many deaths, or people suffering.
This issue violated the Universal Declaration of Human Rights because everyone has the right to get what they want, such as living standards and many others. Haiti doesn’t have many of these things, and that breaks the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It breaks Article 25: Right to Adequate Living Standards, because they’re certainly not living happily with these living standards. It states “You have the right to have what you need to live a decent life, including food, clothes, a home, and medical care for you and your family. You have the right to get help from society if you’re sick or unable to work, if you’re older or a widow, or if you’re in any other kind of situation that keeps you from working through no fault of your own.” However, young children in Haiti
are already working, even when they’re 3 years old. They don’t have goods or at least decent healthcare, easy access to medicine, or clean water. It’s not right, and they deserve the same living standards as anyone else.
Loune Viaud, Director of Operations and Strategic Planning at Zanmi Lasante (Partners in Health – Haiti), has worked with the Robert F. Kennedy Center. They have been working on this issue and she worked with them since 2002. She also received the RFK Human Rights Award by doing so. Loune Viaud has done a lot and is still helping the helpless in Haiti, never stopping or giving up. She also was recognized for her innovative human rights-based approach by establishing health care systems in Haiti. This is difficult because help goes a long way, but not just by one person. Even though Loune Viaud was a great impact and helped in many ways, sometimes help needs to come in numbers to help break through suffering. The Staff of Partners in Health, and the Haiti Solidarity group also helped too. There was also need to strengthen the capacity of the Government of Haiti. Therefore, one person cannot help much, but her organization can really impact the lives of Haiti.
